How many chiropractic visits do I really need?

The Mercy Center Consensus Conference Guidelines recommends up to 66 visits within a period of 26 weeks for severe cases. The numbers go down from there as cases become less and less complicated. So, it really depends on several factors. Have you been in an auto accident? Perhaps several over your lifetime? How is your overall health? Are you carrying too much body fat? Do you smoke or drink alcohol (more than 1 to 2 drinks/day)? Are you under a lot of emotional stress? Are you closer to 20 years old or 50 years old? I think you get the point.

Outside factors that dictate treatment length can be determined by your chiropractors skill level. How effective are the doctor's treatments? Are you following the doctor's recommendations and treatment protocol. Did you give up to soon?

Whatever the length of the treatment protocol that is recommended by your chiropractor, don't be afraid to ask questions. This assures that you know what the expectations are. My policy is to make sure my patients are at least 50% better in their symptoms in the first 6 visits. If not, I either change protocol or refer out for a second opinion. You mileage may vary with different offices.
