“Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.”  ~Edward Stanley

A few years back, I heard a wise man say “if you move just a little (showing index finger and thumb close together) it is illegal to bury you”.  For most of us it is self-evident that movement is essential to the human body.

The question is: what is the best exercise a person can do?  Answer: the one she’s willing to do.  Whatever you choose to do, don’t overdo it.  There seems to be a law of diminishing return when it comes to exercise.  For most of us the goal of exercise should be to become and stay healthy.  Clearly, playing professional sports does not guarantee a healthy body.

The benefits of exercise according to the staff at the Mayo Clinic are:

Drum roll please…!

·         It improves your mood

·         Combats chronic diseases

·         Helps you manage your weight

·         Boosts your energy level

·         Promotes better sleep

·         Can put spark back into your sex life (make sure the kids aren’t reading over your shoulder)

·         Exercise can be-gasp!-fun.

Here’s something to try…

Walk briskly for at least ½ hour (no more than an hour) at least four days per week.  Do this without holding onto to anything and nothing attached to your ears (headphones etc.) Allow your arms to swing as you are taking long quick strides.  I have found that when patients have done this, they lose weight even without changing their diet. (I probably shouldn’t have told you that!)

Before beginning any exercise program, consult with your physician to see if exercise is appropriate for you and most of all-Be Safe and Have fun!
